Obituary of Grace R. Lyons

Grace Roehm Lyons, aka Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Aunt Grace, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on February 9, 2025.  Born in Irvington on July 13, 1924 to the late Eugene and Anna (Kellner) Roehm, she was a member and an advisor for the Rainbow Girls and graduated from Irvington High School. 

 

Grace went on to work at Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Company in Newark.  In 1949, she became a wife to a firefighter and in 1952, a stay at home mom.  Shortly afterwards moved to the best neighborhood on Revere Road in South Plainfield.

 

Raising her three children there, she participated and chaired many youth organizations from Scouts to the PTA.  Grace also belonged to the Plainfield Chapter of Deborah Hospital.  An avid NY Yankees fan, she also enjoyed cooking, completing daily crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and never missed an opportunity to go on a family adventure.

 

She loved to crochet blankets and did so for over one hundred family and friends, those at Somerset and Overlook Hospital, the American Red Cross in WWII and for Sacred Heart Church in South Plainfield.

 

Later in her professional career, Grace worked for nineteen years as an Assistant Branch Manager and Assistant Treasurer for First Atlantic Savings and Loan in South Plainfield, retiring in 1992.

 

Predeceased by her Robert (Bob) Lyons, the love of her life for seventy-six years, sisters, Margaret Roehm Haldeman (Sam,) Jean Roehm Youse (Roger,) sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lyons, Anne Lyons Gorman (Jim,) and brother-in-law Frank Lyons (Marian.) And most recently her loving daughter-in -law, Dorothy Bowen Lyons.

 

Grace is survived by her children; Robert W. (Bob) Lyons of Mexico, Margaret (Pegg) Ponzio and her partner Gene Moquin and Susan BouChamoun and her husband George of Stockton.  She was blessed with eight loving grandchildren, eleven plus great-grandchildren who enjoyed zooming with GGGrace from all over the country and by several nieces and nephews related by blood and by love.

 

Visitation will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 5pm until 8pm and on Friday, February 14, 2025 beginning 11:00am at McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080.  Funeral services will begin on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 11:30am followed by burial at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Grace’s name may be sent to the New Jersey Firefighters Benevolent Association (www.njfmba.org.)
