

Obituary of Dalton Simmons
Dalton Simmons, a 55 year resident of Plainfield, New Jersey passed away peacefully at his home during the early morning hours on Monday, May 19, 2025. He was two months shy of his 91st birthday.
Dalton was born in Kinston, North Carolina on July 27, 1934 to the late Richmond Franklin and Verna Mae Simmons Williams. He attended the public schools of Kinston and graduated from Adkin High School. During the summer months of his high school years he worked at various venues/resorts along the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In 1957 after the marriage to the late Rubie Lee Burney of Grifton, N.C., they migrated to New Jersey.
Dalton and Rubie were residents of Morristown, New Jersey prior to moving to Plainfield, New Jersey in 1969, After migrating to New Jersey, he held full time employment at the Gill School in Bernardsville, N.J., State of New Jersey – Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, N.J. and with a family in Somerset County, N.J. Dalton had a very strong work ethic and was highly respected by his bosses, coworkers, friends, neighbors and family members.
One of his greatest joy was being a devoted husband to his wife Rubie, who passed away on May 25, 2023 and a father to his three children. Dalton worked hard to provide for his wife and children. He made sure his children obtained a college education and had a chance to travel throughout the United States and abroad.
Dalton is survived by his children, Dorita Brokenbough, Darrin Simmons and Darice Dixon (Edward Jerome); grandchildren; Jason Brokenbough and Kristin Brokenbough. Dalton is also survived by a brother, Clarence Henry Williams; devoted cousins, Wilbert Nobles (Iona), Mary Nobles – Jackson (Marvin), James Nobles (Cynthia) and Alvin Nobles (Alice); brother-in-law, Clarence Burney (Ruth); two sisters-in- law, Doris Hooker and Linda Dixon and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.
Dalton is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rubie; parents, step-father, Clarence Williams; cousins, Emmett Simmons and his wife Ercelle, Ella Nobles, Patricia Cheatham and Gary Nobles (Celeste); in-laws, Odell Burney and Bessie Burney Williams, brother-in-law, Johnnie Burney and his wife Rosa; sister-in-law, Delois Aulton and two brothers-in-law, Wilton Hooker and Joseph Dixon.

The visitation will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 beginning at 10am followed by an 11am funeral service at St. John’s Baptist Church, 2387 Morse Ave. Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
Immediately following the funeral service, Dalton will be entombed in the Pond View Mausoleum at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, New Jersey.
