I am very sad to hear this news. I would be remiss if I didn’t share that on two occasions while ice skating on Lake Nelson I got onto ice that was too thin and I took the plunge into the lake. For anyone in this situation you know that it is very difficult to get out. Luckily, on both occasions, Chuck skated over with great urgency from out of nowhere and helped me to get out. This was no small feat as it took him having to spread himself out so that he himself didn’t fall in and he used a hockey stick and balance to make sure I made it out. I had the very real sense that he would not abandon me as that is what he projected. No one else around the situation seemed to know what to do, but Chuck acted with great urgency and purpose to help me. I was always appreciative of this and have never forgotten it. I am sure that must say something profound about his character although I have not seen him since the 1980’s. I am sorry that he is no longer here to help others out in need. There is no way I was the only in a host of other situations.

My cherished memories of Chuck and all seven of us cousins are playing hide and seek down by the lake, running through the backyards of your neighborhood playing tag, and catching fireflies at night fall. Too many of us are gone now and that makes my heart weep. You had the warmest smile and the kindest heart. I wish we had made it to the track this summer like we talked about doing. I'll play an exacta and the daily double in your honor. I know you will send me some luck of the Irish. Rest in peace Chuck with your parents and beloved brothers, Chris and Mike. You will be missed at the next Bennett family reunion. Love, cousin Debbie

For the Bennett Family - I am so very sorry for your loss. Though I'm feeling sad inside, I am blessed to have had Chuck as my friend, throughout High School. So many memories skipping class and hiding out in Speedy's classroom. Many drunken nights in and around the Lake. I confided in Chuck many times knowing that he'd never repeat a word. A special & loyal friend! I moved away shortly after HS, but we kept in touch and went bar hopping whenever I was back in Piscataway for a visit. I do have one special memory of not only Chuck but of all the Lake Guys/Gals. The February 1978 blizzard! My parents were stranded in Vegas. My house in Gramercy was open house to everyone! The entire living room floor was piled high with so many coats you couldn't see the carpet! The snow piled up in the backyard and was perfect for keeping the keg(s) cold! We played " Quarters" for two days!! And my parents never knew until years later! Chuck you will live on in my heart full of memories. (Marc & Mikey as well) Until we meet again . . . Was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my dear cousin. We didn't just share a family bond - we grew up creating countless memories that are now more precious than ever - from all of our family holiday get togethers to backyard barbeques and skating on the pond near your childhood home.
Chuck was more than just a cousin; he was a friend and sibling in spirit. He was family by blood, but a brother by bond - someone whose laughter was infectious and whose presence always felt like home. I will carry those memories with me always and honor the beautiful soul you were.
May you rest in peace, and may we find comfort in the love and light you brought into our lives.
With love and sorrow,
Robert 'John' Bennett
