Grace T. Jakowlew, 102, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, October 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
A resident of Middlesex since 1947, Grace was born and raised in New Brunswick, along with a sister and six brothers, all who served during WWII. She has many fond memories of the city, working at a young age at local businesses. After high school, she was employed by J&J, working her way up to executive secretary.
She acted with New Brunswick theater groups and sang in local big bands, the J&J Glee Club and USO. She was a runner up in the Miss NJ Beauty Pagent in Atlantic City. During WWII, she was a night time volunteer at Camp Kilmer, placing phone calls for soldiers calling home before going overseas.
Grace married her husband, Walter in 1947. Settling in Middlesex, they built their first home, later building a second home when their family expanded. She worked as a pharmacist assistant and was active as a volunteer in many groups including the Girl Scouts, PTO, and Somerset Hospital Holiday Twig.
Grace was as a devout Catholic, a member of the Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish and Alter Rosary Society. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, painting, dancing, and was a worldwide traveler. But most of all, she cherished the time spent with her family.
Grace is predeceased by her husband, Walter. She leaves behind daughter Kathi Filik and her husband Greg, daughter Cindy Perone and her husband Sal, son Jeff Jakowlew, grandson Chris and his wife Marie, grandson Kevin and his wife Jen, great grandsons Matthew and Jack, and nieces and nephew.
A visitation will be held at the Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ, on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 3 PM to 6 PM.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, 600 Harris Avenue, Middlesex, NJ, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 9:30 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home prior to mass, beginning at 8:30 AM.
Following mass, burial will take place at Resurrection Burial Park, 899 E. Lincoln Avenue, Piscataway, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in Grace’s name.
