Obituary of Herbert Michael MacDonald

Please share a memory of Herbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

North Plainfield – Herbert Michael “Mike” MacDonald, 73, passed away at Overlook Hospital on Friday, January 2, 2026, with his wife Megan of 43 years by his side.

In 1952 while his father, Herbert, was serving overseas, Elaine MacDonald gave birth to their son Mike in Camp Kilmer NJ. His family then moved to North Plainfield where Mike became a lifelong resident.

Mike followed in his father’s footsteps and served our country, having earned an honorable discharge in 1977.

Mike’s compassion for animals was demonstrated through his 35 years of participation in the trapping, neutering and release of feral cats (TRN).

A dedicated electronics enthusiast, Mike pursued his passion through studies at Somerset County College, earning skills in computer programming. He built a fulfilling career in the tech industry, working for various companies before retiring from his dream job at Dialogic in 2001.

In his free time, Mike enjoyed amateur radio and tinkering with ham radios, always exploring new ways to connect and innovate.

Mike maintained an active lifestyle by long distance bicycling, geocaching and motorcycling.

Mike’s adventurous spirit, technical expertise, and warm personality will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, dedication, and passion for life.

In addition to his wife Megan, Mike is survived by his children Cara Williams (husband Dan), Christopher MacDonald, and sister Nanette Pavona.

Cremation services are under the direction of the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, South Plainfield.
