Michael J. Surman, 60, died suddenly Tuesday, January 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Brunswick, he was the son of Daniel Surman, Sr. and Cecelia (Tenaglia) Surman. Michael resided in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Michael was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Metuchen and Boston University. He previously worked for Yale University as a research assistant. Always on the go, Michael had a deep appreciation for family gatherings, skiing, the arts, and-most of all-food. A true foodie, he was known as the person to call for restaurant recommendations anywhere in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Above all else, Michael often said that being Ben’s father was the greatest highlight of his life.
Michael is survived by his mother Cecelia Surman of Piscataway; his son Benjamin Surman and daughter-in-law Gabrielle Surman of Vernon, Connecticut; his brother Daniel Surman, Jr., of Piscataway; his brother Steven Surman and sister-in-law Cynthia Surman, of Tinton Falls; his nephew Jake Surman; and many loving relatives.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 208 Bound Brook Avenue, Piscataway.
Private interment will follow. There will be no visitation. Flowers may be sent to the church.
