Obituary of Thomas Mernagh

Thomas Mernagh, 70, died suddenly Tuesday, January 20, 2026 in Delaware.

Born in Rahway, Tom was raised in Edison, then settled to Piscataway where he raised his children with his beloved wife, Nancy (nee Weaver).  They retired to Lewes, Delaware 6 years ago.  Tom was the owner of T. Mernagh Construction for over 40 years, retiring in 2020 when his son, Craig took over. 

Tom was known for his meticulous skills as a contractor, which was shown through his daily life.  He was always willing to give advice and had joy in helping those who were working on home improvement projects.  An avid bowler, Tom enjoyed spending time at the bowling alley both in his younger years and recently. He’s been known to bowl 300 games and even scored one last week!  He always enjoyed critiquing others’ bowling in a fun and loving way.  Tom also loved spending time with his familyand friends at the Jersey Shore where they enjoyed water skiing, swimming, crabbing, and boating.  Tom was part of a card group for many years as well as being part of a baseball and softballteam in his younger years.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Nancy Mernagh; three children, Michelle Mernagh, Nicole Nietzer and husband Jesse, Craig Mernagh and wife Jenny.  He will also be missed by his four grandchildren, Anna, Caden, Parker and Spencer. He is survived by his siblings: Eugene A. Mernagh, Elizabeth (Betty) Conry, and Linda Mernagh.

Family and friends may gather on Thursday, January 29, 2026 in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue South Plainfield NJ 07080 from 4-7PM.  

Cremation will be held privately.

A service will also be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 11AM in the First Baptist Church of South Plainfield 201 Hamilton Blvd South Plainfield, NJ 07080. 

A celebration of life will be held at Indian Mission Church, 22701 Indian Mission Road Harbeson, Delaware, which will be announced at a later date.  

In lieu of flowers, the Mernagh family has requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association, in Tom’s name.
