Middlesex, NJ Richard P. Zakashefski, 77, died suddenly at his residence on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Born in Shamokin, PA to his late parents Frank and Leona (Topolski) Zakashefski, he has been a resident of Middlesex for the past forty-eight years.A proud honorably discharged veteran, Richard served as a Tin Can Sailor in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 on the Destroyer USS Picking 685. In 1996, Richard retired from National Starch and Chemical Co. formerly of Plainfield where he worked as a millwright in the maintenance department. He was an outgoing and friendly father and was a great story teller especially about his adventures in the Navy. He enjoyed fishing and loved spending time at the Jersey Shore with his son Daniel on their boat. He also belonged to Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish in Middlesex. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son Richard W. Zakashefski and a brother Frank Zakashefski.Richard leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-eight years Maryann (Seroski) Zakashefski and their children; Daniel and his wife Sharon of Middlesex and Christopher and his wife Tammy of Minn. He will be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren; Brielle, Bailee, Christopher, Valene and Julie, his three adored great grandchildren; Lily, Mason and Peyton along with his siblings; Nancy McBride and Barbara Zakashefski both of Harrisburg, PA.Visitation will take place in the Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ 08846 on Thursday, January 23, 2014 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Military Honors will be held during the visitation at 5:00 pm and a religious service will begin at 6:45 pm.At the request of the family, cremation will follow privately.
