Obituary of Carmela Vitale

Carmela Vitale, 95, of Old Bridge, NJ, died peacefully on September 29, 2015 at the hospice at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick from complications following hip surgery. Born Carmela Mistretta in Jersey City, she married Vincent Vitale in 1941, and worked as a seamstress for many years after raising a family. She and her husband moved from Jersey City to Hillside in 1956, then settled in Old Bridge in 1985. Family and friends remember Mrs. Vitale, who preferred to be called Camille, for her gracious entertaining, delicious meals, and beautiful platters of Italian Christmas cookies. Mrs. Vitale was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, and son, Vincent Vitale, Jr., in 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Councilwoman Camille Fernicola of Piscataway, former Middlesex County Freeholder; grandchildren Karen Fernicola Deppa (Roy), David Fernicola (Laura Carey), and Thomas Fernicola (Michelle); and great-grandchildren Nathaniel and Garrett Suhr and Janetta Deppa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday at Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Rd., Piscataway, N.J. Interment will follow at Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia, N.J. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Vitale to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; the Children's Hemiplegia and Stroke Association (CHASA), 4101 W. Green Oaks, Suite 305-149, Arlington, TX 76016; or a charity of your choice.
