Dearest Emma,
We are so very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, Cel. You've both been wonderful neighbors for so many years. Cel will surely be missed. If we can help you in any way, please don't hesitate to call me Emma. God bless you and may Cel rest in peace. May the beautiful memories that you shared be a comfort to you now.

Growing up with Uncle Cel during my elementary school days in Tondo, Manila, got me all the advantages of learning from his purposeful drive and determination.
I remember Uncle waking up early mornings to go to church and even earlier at “O’Dark thirty hour” for the Simbang Gabi (Mass at dawn) during Christmas Season. I knew back then that there were days when he would walk miles to go to church when he did not have the means to ride the jeepney.
After work, he would buy some “turon” (fried Lumpia with banana) and I would be there waiting for him…but with a promise of brushing my teeth very well before going to bed. On weekends I would see him exercising and some days he would be lying flat on the floor (we did not have a bed back then) with a small radio beside him and listening to English news and other “weird” broadcasting discussing dollar figures and the like.
There were many other memories of Uncle…but the above seemed to have influenced me the most. To this day, his resiliency mattered to me as a first generation US-based resident/citizen. It’s delightful to have learned from his Catholic practice as I actively participate in novenas and 9-day Simbang Gabi in northern California. It’s no wonder how I love turon. To this day I waste my calories munching on delicious turon when in Boracay (caveat brushing teeth)…. I always exercise like he did and I still feel better sleeping flat on the floor. I learned dollar figures, too. He was on the spectrum of investing and saving….but I am more on spending.
Uncle, I have always looked up to you as the most-respected Uncle that exemplifies a true gentleman, a devoted husband, a loving dad, and a caring grandfather. I love you and I thank you.
