Obituary of Marie A. Cornell
Marie Agnes Cornell, 96, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021 peacefully in the comfort of her home in South Plainfield.
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, N.J., Mrs. Cornell had been a resident of the Borough of South Plainfield for 64 years. She was a 1943 graduate of St. Patrick’s high school, where she met, and post WWII, married her school sweetheart Frank in 1949. She worked at the Singer Sewing Machine Company as an administrative assistant prior to starting a family.
Marie and Frank relocated to So. Plainfield in 1957, along with her inseparable sister Betty and husband Jack O’Brien, and set deep roots in her beloved Revere Road community. She was an active parishioner in both Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Czestochowa. After raising her three young children, Marie re-entered the workforce employed by the Bradlees department store as a receiving manager.
Marie was known as compassionate, caring and supportive to all. She loved to dance and entertain her loving extended family and friends. Marie enjoyed annual New Jersey shore vacations, and in retirement, a shared family vacation home located on Drayton Island, Florida. Marie was a lifelong learner and an avid reader, loving a good mystery. She was a longtime supporter of the South Plainfield Public Library.
She is predeceased by her husband, Frank; sister, Betty O’Brien and brother, Walter Grampp.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Bladey and her husband Conrad of Linthicum, MD and Catherine Cornell of South Plainfield; son, Patrick Cornell and his wife Dawn of Marlboro and grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Cornell, and Margaret Bladey. She will be missed by her sister- in-law Eleanor Coleman and the families of her many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will available at 9am on Saturday, December 11, 2021 in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ immediately followed by a 10:30 am funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield. Marie will be placed to rest in her family plot at Hillside Cemetery on a later day.
