Obituary of Merle C. Schmalz

Piscataway – Merle Schmalz, known to many as Grumpy, 80, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center – Somerset in Somerville.

Merle was born and raised in Falls, Pa., he moved to Piscataway in 1978 where he and his late wife, Katherine, raised their family.

He had been employed by Amtrak and later for Dunellen Glass until his retirement.

Grumpy enjoyed traveling, was a car enthusiast and adored all things Disney.  He cherished the time spent with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Predeceased by his wife Katherine in 2003, he is survived by two children; daughter Renee Schmalz of Piscataway and son Brian Schmalz and his wife Jennifer of Stewartsville, NJ.

He is also survived by his grandchildren;  Tanaea, Jayden, Zachary, Jace and Grayson  and siblings; Margaret Petcavage and Tom Schmalz.

Family and friends may attend the visitation hours on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 4-7 PM in the Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway, NJ 08856.  

A funeral service will take place at 7 PM with cremation and entombment of his cremated remains taking place privately.
