I met John in 1986 at my first corporate job working for Met Life, we were both account executives selling life insurance and other products. John and I hit it off from the start and our friendship grew from there over the next 36 years.
In life we all make friends and acquaintances and people come in and out of your life for different reasons, but the good ones stay with you forever and you cherish them, and you hold on tight and don’t let go.
John Montecalvo was one of those in my life who I loved dearly and never let go. I learned so many life lessons from John and a ton of corporate life lessons which I still use to this day. Years ago, he said to me “You are my turtle” I said turtle? Why am I and what is a turtle? John who was a Korean War Veteran who saw action while there went on to explain to me that there always one soldier in the platoon that everyone kinda looked out for and made sure he was protected and taken care of…………..to John I was his turtle and he taught me so many things and guided me thru out the years. My parents were my main go to in life when it came to big decisions and John was next in line after them with what should I do here John? He was always a very logical in his thought process and always guided me in the right way.
29 years ago when we got married I asked John to be in my wedding party, he was reluctant at first saying "that's for you young kids." To that I replied "You mean that much to me and I am not taking no for an answer and we want you to be a part of our day"......he accepted which made us all very happy.
I/we have so many great memories with John over the years....our fun in the office at night doing the Jumble and Crypto Quotes in the Star Ledger.....changing spark plugs in my Grand National in the parking lot with suits on and John teaching me how to index plugs.....his trips to Englishtown with me......coming to my hockey games.....putting a motor in my car in the garage at 1am.......poker games.....trips to Atlantic City....John teaching me how to smoke a pipe......as he was teaching me how I'll never forget his words....."Rich when it's right it's like a pacifier"......lol. Every time I have smoke my pipe I think of John and will continue to do so every time.
I can go on and on about all the good times we had with John with all our friends and his love for them and their love for him. My one on one time with John was the best tho I was a second son to him and and he was a second father to me and I would like to thank the Montecalvo family for sharing John with me the last 36 years.
The last few years were tough on John with his health issues and as his family and I were at his bedside hoping for a miracle, it was for me a replay of almost 6 years ago as my Dad was about to pass. You pray and you hope for the best but it wasn’t to be. God needed another Angel and heaven is a better place with John in it.
I’ve always said everyone needs to have a Monty in their life and I was blessed for the last 36 years to have John Montecalvo in my life and I will miss him terribly. I Love you John!
