Obituary of Robert Smith
Robert W. Smith, 93, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at home in South Plainfield.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY Robert was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. Following graduation he was employed by Sapolin Paint Company as a chemist. He left Sapolin Paint Company in 1980 after several promotions eventually becoming Plant Manager. He met Marian Parrish in 1951 and they married in 1954. Robert lived a life of service beginning with his leadership of the youth group at All Souls Universalist Church in Brooklyn NY where he was also an usher. He belonged to Genesis Masonic Lodge in Brooklyn and was active with his son’s Boy Scout Troop as an adult leader. He supported his daughter’s membership in her Rainbow Assembly and was known for driving Rainbow Girls all over New York, Marian at his side, to attend Rainbow functions.
After moving to South Plainfield with Marian in 1978, Robert and Marian joined Wesley United Methodist church where Robert immediately got involved with serving his church. He was an ever present usher, Liturgist and member of the Men’s Club and will always be remembered for his corny “Dad” jokes.
Robert loved traveling and camping in their RV. After retiring from Randolph Products Company in Carlstadt, NJ as Plant Manager, he and Marian continued to travel eventually visiting 48 states. He especially looked forward to spending the winters in Florida.
Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years Marian, daughter Carol Smith of Yuma, AZ, son William Smith of Stormstown, PA and grandchildren Richard White of South Plainfield, NJ and Chanelle King of La Mesa, CA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday April 19 from 1-3 PM and 6-8 PM with a 7PM prayer service in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
Cremation services will take place privately.
