Obituary of Monserrate Bender

Monserrate “Tatty” Bender, 78, a longtime resident of South Plainfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Brookdale Senior Living in Dover, DE.

The eldest of 12 children, Tatty was born in Puerto Rico to Alberto and Ana Celia Quiles, she grew up in Puerto Rico, before immigrating to the United States, and residing in Brooklyn, followed by Flushing.

While working at American Express in New York City, she met James Bender, who she later married in 1974. In 1983, the two relocated to South Plainfield where they raised their children.

A devout catholic, Tatty often volunteered at the Holy Savior Academy. She could also be found Gardening or cooking, but her most important moments were those spent with her family.

Tatty is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, James Bender; sons, David and his wife Sue, and James. She will also be missed by her three grandchildren, Christina, Cadence, and David and her mother Ana Celia along with a host of extended relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held at South Plainfield Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, on Monday, June 19, 2023, from 3 PM to 7 PM.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 6:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the Bender family has asked that donations be made to the Act Now Foundation, a Dementia Resource Center, in Tatty’s name.
