Obituary of John Mayer, Sr.
Piscataway, NJ – John Mayer, Sr., 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Complete Care – Plainfield.
Born and raised in Jersey City, to the late Frederick and Florence Mayer, John attended Snyder High School and later went on to join the United States Army. He proudly served as a mechanic for the motor pool and was stationed in Germany during his enlistment.
Following his military service, John started a family with his late wife, Edna England Mayer, in Jersey City, and the family later moved to Piscataway in 1960, where they raised their nine children.
With the skills he learned in the military, John was able to start a career as a mechanic. Working a variety of jobs throughout the years, it was through Bishop Sanzari Construction that John was able to find a home. Here he worked as a truck driver and mechanic for over 20 years.
John is predeceased by his wife Edna England Mayer; granddaughter Christina Barrett Michaels; grandson Brian Mayer; and siblings Flo, Eva, and Fred.
Surviving are his nine children, Carol Mayer Barrett Caswell, John Mayer, Jr. and his wife Diane, George Mayer and his wife June, Michael Mayer and his partner Wendy, Raymond Mayer and his wife Nancy, James Mayer and his wife Cathy, Frederick Mayer and his wife Liz, Margie Mayer Moore, and Eugene Mayer and his partner Jeff. He will also be missed by his 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, as well as his siblings Edna, George, and Marilyn, along with a host of extended relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held at the Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, from 4 PM to 8 PM.
Funeral services and Military Honors will take place at the funeral home beginning at 7:30 PM.
Cremation services will take place privately.
A private graveside service will take place at Lake Nelson Memorial Park in Piscataway, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United States Veteran Affairs, in John’s name.
