Obituary of Richard L. Ehrnman
On Tuesday, December 5th, Richard (Dick) Ehrnman, entered into eternal peace surrounded by his family. Born November 9, 1947 to George and Frances (Smalley) Ehrnman, Dick grew up in Westfield, New Jersey before moving to Piscataway, New Jersey in 1972.
Dick graduated from Elizabethtown College with a degree in Education. He received his Masters of Education from Kean University. He taught in Plainfield, NJ for ten years before making a career change to IT. In 1980, he joined Continental Insurance. He then worked for Siemens Technology as a programmer. He later joined AT&T where he worked as a data base manager. Following AT&T’s divestiture, he worked at Chubb and finally at Verizon Wireless until his retirement in 2012.
Dick was an avid boater. He purchased his first boat in 1974. In addition to boating, he enjoyed camping with friends and family. Other favorite pastimes included traveling to visit family and friends, and making trips to Alaska, Scotland, Ireland, the Caribbean, and several Canadian Provinces. Numerous vacations were also spent at the National Parks across the United States.
Music was an important part of Dick’s life. He sang in the choir from junior high through high school, where he was also a member of the elite male chorus, The Thirteen. He also sang in the church choirs at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield and later Christ United Methodist Church in Piscataway. His musical talents were not just vocal. Dick played the 12-string guitar and later, hand bells with the Jubilee Ringers at CUMC.
More than anything, Dick’s greatest love was his family. Dick met his wife Carol in junior high school. After eight years of courtship, they were married in 1970. They were blessed with twin daughters and he was a devoted father, always putting his family first.
Dick was an active participant in his children’s activities. In the early years, he assisted with their Girl Scout Troop’s projects and later was involved with the Piscataway High School Concert Choir. Even in their adulthood, he was never far from being a part of their lives. Family time was often spent sharing his love of travel, boating and the outdoors.
He was predeceased by his parents George and Frances Ehrnman and his brother Robert Bruce Ehrnman. Dick is survived by his wife of 53 years Carol (nee Bartlett), daughters Holly Ehrnman and Melissa Ehrnman; sister-in-law Deborah Bartlett Cantor; nephews Greg Ehrnman, Brad Ehrnman, Bart Cantor; nieces Ashley Cantor, Stephanie Bricker; and many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as a host of loving family members and friends.
