Martin A. Jones Obituary

Middlesex – Martin A. Jones, 101, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday afternoon, July 7, 2024.

Born in Nenagh, Ireland to the late James and Alice (Horan) Jones, Martin immigrated to the United States in 1946 with his mother and brothers, where they reunited in the Bronx with their father.  He was drafted into the Army in 1950 and served during the Korean War, earning 2 Bronze Stars during his honorable service.

While working for Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC as a Stock Transfer Agent, he met his wife Joan O’Rourke. The pair settled down in Middlesex Borough, where they raised their family.  He then went to General Electric, where he worked until retirement in 1985. Active with Our Lady of Mount Virgin, Martin volunteered his time running Bingo nights as well being an usher during mass.

Martin was an avid golfer and excelled at hurling growing up, even placing as a NY Hurling Champion for several years.  Martin loved his garden of tomatoes, basil, and scallions and could be seen in the kitchen often baking fresh soda bread. He has fond memories of spending summers at Ocean City, NJ all his life and loved “walking the boards” and eating seafood. Known to all as an exquisite storyteller, he loved telling stories about his childhood in Ireland and his time in England during WWII. He cherished time with his family, especially weekly lunches with his daughters and time spent with his grandchildren (as Pop Pop).

Predeceased by his wife, Joan Jones; son, Robert Jones; two brothers, Dennis and Noel Jones; and nephew John Jones; surviving are his two loving daughters, Joanne Hamershock (Bob) and  Maureen Jones, both of Brick, NJ, Jane Jones, and two cherished grandchildren, Christine Stay (Tom) and Robert Hamershock.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 9AM in the Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex NJ 08846 followed by a funeral mass at 10AM in Our Lady of Mount Virgin, Middlesex.

Martin will be laid to rest beside his wife and son following mass at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway.
