Obituary of Mary Julia Bottone
South Plainfield - Mary Julia Bottone, 82, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Mary was born in New Brunswick, NJ, to George and Mary Gartner (nee Spisak). She was raised in New Brunswick and attended St. Peter's High School. After graduating, Mary worked as a teller in a local bank, where she met her husband. She later held various positions within the tuition and registrar's office at Rutgers University during her nearly 30-year tenure. Mary had been a resident of South Plainfield since 1971 and was a devoted member of Sacred Heart RC Church in the Borough, where she put all four of her children through the affiliated Sacred Heart school program.
Mary had a wide range of interests, all centered around her friends and family. As she grew older, her carefree summers with friends in Point Pleasant transitioned to weekend beach trips with her young family, helping with homework, and shuttling her children to sports practices and events. Mary liked to cook, and being of German and Hungarian descent, Mary often included dishes like stuffed cabbage, chicken paprikash, or homemade spatzle and gravy in her menu. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed sewing and knitting, creating beautiful blankets for each of her grandchildren. She frequently used her sewing skills to mend stuffed animals and clothes for her active grandchildren.
Mary will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Michael Bottone; four children, Michael Bottone and wife Rachel, Kristine Bottone, Nicole Gootee and husband Kevin, and Jill Bottone-Fedison and husband Brian; her brother, George Gartner; and her five grandchildren, Lia, Gianni, Brody, Benjamin, and Reagan.
Visitation will be held on Monday. October 14, 2024 from 4-7PM in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 10AM at Church of the Sacred Heart, South Plainfield, NJ, family and friend may gather in the funeral home beginning at 9AM.
Entombment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway, NJ 08854.
