Gordon Daniel Cassidy, affectionately known as "Hoppy" and "Danny", 84, of Piscataway, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on February 8, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, Somerset in Somerville. Born in Bangor, Maine to the late Gordon and Frances Cassidy, he was raised in Dunellen and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier. After his honorable discharge in 1956, he became a lifelong member of the VFW Post 5479 in Dunellen. Mr. Cassidy married his beloved wife Alice and settled in Piscataway where they raised their family. He worked as a machinist/millwright for M.A.N. Roland for over 50 years perfecting his craft working on, installing and repairing newspaper printing presses. During his career and military service he traveled extensively, visiting every state and 20 different countries. After his retirement, Danny continued to do consult work and was handy at fixing things around the house. His free time was spent sitting in his yard enjoying the weather, doing crossword puzzles and conversation with anyone who would stop by. Danny was also a classic car enthusiast, collecting different models through the years. Most of all, Danny enjoyed the quality time spent with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son James Cassidy in 1997. Surviving are his beloved wife of 64 years, Alice Cassidy nee Czernikiewicz, his loving children, Daniel Cassidy, Richard Cassidy, Cynthia Cassidy, Lisa Powlison and husband Lawrence, and Karen Maisano and husband Joseph, his cherished grandchildren, Amanda, Kevin, Eric, Joseph, and Vincent, his dear great-granddaughter Alexandra Rose, and his sisters Eleanor Bowden and Eileen Bodemer, as well as his extended family and friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00PM with military honors to be presented at 7:00PM at the Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, New Market Road, Piscataway.
