Obituary of Maria DeSantis
South Plainfield – Maria DeSantis, 93, passed away early Sunday Morning, November 24, 2024 at JFK Hartwyck Rehab in Edison.
She was a beloved wife, mother, Nonna, Bis-Nonna, and friend whose life was a testament to love, warmth and kindness.
Born in Melizzano, Italy, Maria and her late husband, Antonio, immigrated to the United States in 1971, settling to South Plainfield where they raised their family. Maria was a long-time parishioner of Sacred Heart RC Church.
Maria enjoyed gardening and she will be remembered for her homemade bread, the Italian meals she cooked for her family and friends, and the countless hours spent canning tomatoes.
Maria was also known for her welcoming heart. She had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel like family, always ready with a warm smile, comforting words, or a helping hand. Many fondly remember her open-door policy where there was always a seat at her table and a plate of food waiting for guests.
Maria is predeceased by her loving husband of 69 years, Antonio DeSantis, and beloved son, Nicola DeSantis; she is survived by her two daughters, Lina DeSantis and Rosa Anna Szeliga and husband Richard, and daughter-in-law, Patricia DeSantis.
She will also be missed by her six cherished grandchildren (Tom, Michelle, Melissa, Stephanie, Richie, Angela); six great grandchildren (Shane, Savannah, Antonio, Nicolette, Dominic, Logan); nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends who brought her immense joy.
Maria will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved and those who were fortunate enough to know her.
