Army Air Corps Pilot Engineer
South Plainfield - Thaddeus B. Slodowski - 88, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in the Haven Hospice Unit at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Jersey City, NJ ,Thaddeus resided in Plainfield before settling to South Plainfield in 1954.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the US Army Air Corps as a Sergeant with the 425th Army Air Force Base Unit for four years, one month and a day. Inducted in 1941, he served state side initially as an Airplane Mechanic Instructor and later as a pilot engineer and mechanic prior to his honorable discharge.
Employed with New Jersey Bell Telephone for 35 years, he began his career as a lineman and repair foreman before becoming the Test Bureau Supervisor. Most recently prior to his retirement in 1982, he was working as Plant Service Supervisor/ Repair. Prior to NJ Bell, he was employed with Calco Chemical of Bound Brook.
An 85 year communicant of the former St. Stanislaus RC Church in Plainfield, he served as a lector for more than 33 years at the original location before the church merger. He also served as a boy scout leader of troop #39 of South Plainfield and had been a member of the NRA and served as a rifle instructor.
Thaddeus is predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Christine, his grandson, Bryan Opremcak, his sister, Joan Zaremba and his brother Richard. Surviving are his daughter, Nancy C. Opremcak and her husband, Tim of Basking Ridge, his son Robert T. Slodowski and his wife, Carolyn Merten and his three grandsons, Jeffrey Raunec, Gregory Merten-Slodowski and Justin Merten-Slodowski.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 9:00 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass in St. Bernard of Clairvaux & St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 368 Sumner Ave., Plainfield, NJ.
Interment will follow in St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 6, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
