Frederick J. "Fred" Kennedy




South Plainfield - Frederick J. "Fred" Kennedy, 89, died on Friday, February 2, 2007 in the Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison.




Born and raised in the Ironbound Section of Newark, Fred has resided in the Boro since 1952.




Fred was employed with Western Electric in Kearny for 45 years and was a member of the Pioneers of America. Mr. Kennedy served with U. S. Army during WWII. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France and was bestowed with the Medal of Honor, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.




A family man that enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, Fred frequented Atlantic City and playing the N.J. Lotto.




He is pre-deceased by his wife Bethea "Betty" who died in 1998, a son James F., who died in 2003, his mother Estelle Henning and his two sisters; Helen Smith and Estelle Wingert.




Surviving are his two daughters; Joyce Walton and her husband Rick and Carol Smith and her husband Tom, all of South Plainfield, six grandchildren; Elaine MacLaren, Jesse, Jacob, and Rebecca Kennedy, Tommy Smith, and Rick Walton, his sister in-law Isabella Harkey and his loving boxer, Max.




Funeral services and visitation are private and under the direction of the McCriskin Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield.
