Elizabeth "Betty" Pellegrino South Plainfield - Elizabeth "Betty" (Dohanyos) Pellegrino, 95, died peacefully Sunday evening February 22, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Hungary, she came to the United States at the age of 3. She had resided in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Perth Amboy before settling to South Plainfield following her marriage to Frederick " Mikey" Pellegrino in 1938. She began her employment in 1967 with the South Plainfield Police Department as one of the first crossing guards. She was stationed at the same corner, Jackson Avenue and Hamilton Boulevard, for nearly 40 years before her retirement. In addition, Betty had assisted the police department as one of the original women who assisted with female transportation, as well as, the organizing of the dog census and dog licensing. As a long time communicant of Our Lady of Czestochowa RC Church in South Plainfield, she served as the Sacristan for many years and was a member of their Altar Rosary Society. Betty also enjoyed cooking and feeding whomever came to her home, regardless of the day and time. Her husband Frederick "Mikey" Pellegrino died in 1996. Surviving are four children; twins, Marion Valeri and Vincent Pellegrino, Frederick, Jr. and Elizabeth Nissel; her sister, Irene Gregowicz and her brother, Zoltan Dohanyos. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jodi Pudimott, Sue Duarte, Michael Nissel and David Nissel and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 8:30 PM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 . Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation hours from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM Thursday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 1 Union Street, Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691
