Antonio J. Sarnicola
South Plainfield - Antonio J. Sarnicola, 88, died on Friday, December 5, 2008 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.
Born and raised in Long Island City, Mr. Sarnicola resided in Jackson Heights, Queens for many years before moving to South Plainfield in 1986.
A World War II Veteran, Antonio served with the Army where he was a awarded the Purple Heart. For nearly 30 years he worked for the United States Postal Service in Long Island City as a Postal Worker.
An avid Yankees fan, Mr. Sarnicola had a great love for life. He enjoyed working around the house and tending to his garden. He was proud of his Italian heritage but his greatest pleasure in life was the devotion to his family. Antonio was a dear husband, father, grandfather and a great friend to many people - old and young and was notorious for his signature "un-lit" cigar which he always carried.
He is pre-deceased by the love of his life Fonda who died in 1987, his daughter Ann Sarnicola who died in 1964 and by two sisters; Grace LaVolpa and Angie Caldera.
Surviving are his loving children and their spouses; Camille Deutsch and her husband David of South Plainfield, Frank and his wife Judy of West Milford and Anthony and his wife Regina of Manhattan, his sister Eleanor Bedell of Middle Village, New York, his brothers; Teddy Sarnicola and his wife Dolores of Bayshore, New York and Vinnie Sarnicola nad his wife Joan of East Stroudsburg, Pa., his adoring grandchildren; Benjamin Deutsch, Jaclyn Polyniak and her husband Douglas, Jennifer Painter and her husband Jim, Jessica and Madeleine Sarnicola and Gene Roos. In addition, also surviving is Dolores Rapatski, his long time dear friend.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield.
Interment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park, Piascataway
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
