Wilmington, NC. - Formerly of South Plainfield, NJ. - Joseph M. Sylvester, 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC. Born and raised in Scotch Plains, NJ, He settled to South Plainfield in 1965. He resided in the boro until 1994 when he retired to Wilmington, NC after a career with the United States Postal Service where he worked as a Postal Carrier for the South Plainfield Post Office. Joseph proudly served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed bowling, softball, playing horseshoes and fishing. He could also be found in his yard gardening. Predeceased by four siblings; Mary, Louise, Michael and Frederick. Surviving are his wife, Christa ( Wittmaack ), four children; son, Andreas Sylvester and his wife Lisa, son; Michael, daughter; Christa Marie and her husband, Kevin and son; Steven (Mindy). Additionally surviving are four beloved grandchildren; Shannon Rosario and her husband, John, Gavin Sylvester, Bridget Sylvester and Hunter Sylvester and two great grandchildren; Adrianna and Jaxson Rosario. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 9am until 12 noon in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ, 07080. All are also welcomed to attend and participate in reflections and sharing beginning at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the lower Cape Fear Hospice 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC., 28401.
