South Plainfield - Bernard J. Hornick, 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a short illness.
Born and raised in Pittston, PA, to the late John and Catherine, Bernard was one of eight children. He settled to South Plainfield in 1964.
As a veteran of the United States Air force, Bernard served from 1954-1957 prior to his honorable discharge.
He began his career as a machine operator with GM New Departure - Hyatt Bearing in Clark where he worked for 30 years. After their closing, Bernard worked for Pfizer in East Rutherford for 6 years until his retirement.
Bernard enjoyed camping and hunting, but most importantly, he enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family, being at home and in the yard.
He is predeceased by his parents and six siblings; Eleanor, Helen, Barbara Ann, Joseph, Robert and Edward.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years; Johanna (Eelman), four children; Bernard Jr and wife Nancy, Richard and fiancé Tracy, Aleida-Jo Gassaway and husband, Steven and Timothy D and his wife, Dayna. A sister, Margaret, twelve grandchildren; Christopher, Andrew, Melissa, Holly, Erica, Steven, Hannah - Jo, Thomas, Gabriella, Arianna, Wyatt and Grant and four great grandchildren; Dylan, Lily, Charlotte and Natalie.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield NJ 07080.
Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Tuesday from 6-9 PM and Wednesday from 10:30 until the time of the service..
