Obituary of Peter Voorhees Ackerman

South Plainfield - Peter Voorhees Ackerman, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at AristaCare at Norwood Terrace in Plainfield. Born in Bridgewater, Peter was a life long resident of South Plainfield Borough. He worked with the United States Postal Service as a Clerk in the Plainfield, Netherwood and Watchung offices until his retirement. Peter was a talented carpenter, which he enjoyed doing on the side. A WWII Veteran with the US ARMY, receiving four bronze stars during his service, Peter was a life member with the South Plainfield Elks and a former member of the South Plainfield Planning Board. He was also a former South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department member, serving as a part time fire inspector and once serving as an Official with the State Fire Commission. Predeceased by his sister, Ann Wasko, surviving are his wife of 70 years, Kathleen (Gannon), six children, Marie Schneider (Wolf), Kathleen Klatt (William), Anne Ackerman-O'Brien (John), Joan Reach (Richard), Peter (Cindy) and Michael (Susan) and sister, Ruth Cleaves. He will also be missed by his 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by a funeral mass in Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield at 10 AM. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. Family and friends are invited to join together for visitation on Friday from 5-8PM in the funeral home.
