Commander Anne Check South Plainfield, NJ - Commander Anne Check, 93, died on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Menlo Park. Commander Check , USN, clinical instructor and a nursing service supervisor, holds the distinction of having visited every continent in the world except Australia in her Navy career, which began August 26, 1940. After attending Flight Nurse School at Randolph, Texas in the fall of 1948, she served in transport squadrons in which she traveled to all South Pacific Islands including Japan, the North Pacific between Seattle and Alaska, and throughout the Atlantic -Iceland, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean from the Patuxent River Command. Before flight duty, Commander Check served at various Naval Stations and Hospitals in Philadelphia, New York, California, Virginia, North Carolina and the Marine Corps Air Station in the Virgin Islands. During 1946-47, she served aboard the USS Repose in the Pacific by which she reached China. A native of Perth Amboy, she received her training at Elizabeth General Hospital. Out of the Navy from 1952 to 1957, she obtained a bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1955 from Rutgers, and a masters degree in Nursing Service Administration from Columbia in 1956. Retiring from the United States Navy in the mid 1960's, Commander Check settled to South Plainfield in 1969. Predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Commander Check leaves behind eight nieces and nephews; Carol Szczesny of Florida, Lois Chismar of Brick, Anton Check of Flemington, Ronald Brinkerhoff of Pittstown, John Ditski of South Plainfield, Gerald McCarthy of Lakewood, Michael McCarthy of Old Bridge and Thomas McCarthy of Pennsylvania. She also leaves behind many great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 beginning 9:15am in the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by a 10:00am funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church in South Plainfield. Burial will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 1:00pm until 4:00pm and on Monday from 9:00am until the service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations sent to the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home, 132 Evergreen Road, Edison, NJ 08818 would be appreciated.
