Obituary of Stephen W. Tarczynski

Scotch Plains - Stephen Walter Tarczynski, 96 of Scotch Plains, died November 7, 2013 at home.
Born December 25, 1916, Stephen grew up in Bayonne, NJ. He served over five years in the Army during WWII including three years in the South Pacific and was assigned to the 226 Field Artillery Battalion, where his battalion delivered weapons and artillery to the west coast via horseback from North Carolina. Stephen was wounded by a prisoner that he took pity on and was unaware of his injury for quite some time. He received medals for his effort in the pacific theater including Philippine Liberation Medal, Marksmanship Medal and multiple Bronze Battle Stars.
After the war, Stephen married Helen Pawlak in June 1946, settled in Roselle, NJ and helped start the Roselle Police Auxiliary Squad. He worked at Esso Standard Oil in Bayonne, New York Central Railroad, Curtis Wright, Foster Wheeler and New Departure Hyatt Bearings, General Motors where he was a Millwright.
Predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen Pawlak also of Bayonne, NJ, as well as two sisters, Mamie Okal of Toms River, NJ and Sophie Jakubowski of Bayonne, NJ.
Surviving are a sister, Estelle Kisielewski of Bayonne, NJ, three sons, Stephen Jr and his wife Pamela of Belford, NJ, Robert Tarczynski of Scotch Plains, NJ and Richard Tarczynski and his wife Carla of Toms River. Also surviving are a much beloved grandson, Todd, of Scotch Plains, NJ, who cared for Stephen, grandson Michael Mignone of Old Bridge, NJ, granddaughter Jennifer Kottyan and husband Allan of Joppa, MD and great grandson, Cooper of Joppa, MD.
He was and remained a proud member of American Legion Post #209 of Scotch Plains. His hobbies included fishing, crabbing and gardening.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 .
Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow.
