-This song pretty much sums it all up for me, If you'd like, copy the link into another browser to hear the song.
Dad,
It's difficult to know where to start, maybe I can work my way backwards to a concluionary statement,,,the hurt is taking on a
new form now, since all the busy has settled down. I'm glad I took today off after getting back from NJ for one last visit with you.
Some people talk about closure, but for me, it's a different process that I'll be facing over the next couple of months, years,
who knows. I still talk to grandpop, pop-pop like they are coaching me through the day, but I don't forsee that being a
method to get through this impact.
I always thought that I'd finish my military service and finally begin a life where our families can come together for bbq-s,
holidays, camp fires etc. I still reach for the phone to call/text about my day and realize, there's no one on the other end now.
We have quite the history together, apart, yet, still connected as the end state remained the same. Wood laden pool table room,
scenic mountain view of the blue ridge with a nice breeze coming through the cabin like game room. I still remember how you'd
crouch while the ball would ease its way over to the pocket...and the "BOOYAA" celebratory yell putting that 3rd ball down while
I'm on the 8 ball. One thing I've never realized until later on, I'm right handed and shoot pool left handed, guess you didn't
consider that when teaching me in the early years. I always pictured the kids, Aerielle, Gavin, Reece, Shane, Caylin
keeping entertained on the beanbag chairs with a movie or video game so we can have some cold ones. Realizing that dream
is a fallacy now, it's difficult to picture myself standing in the same room knowning you'll never show. It's difficult being the head
of the house ensuring holidays become great memories, even though all the kids will be around, it's just us, without the lively
oldies and laughter over several stories we had in the past. There'll be no bbq-s where you'll stop bye with everyone and
throw horse-shoes together while the kids play on the trampoline until the dark hours before the crowding around the camp fire
cracking jokes on each other's inadequacies. It's just me, with a small fire and thoughts of wonder what it could have been like.
Chrissy always said we have strong "live forever" genes in this family and there are no worries to concern this post-military
dream of a "normal" family lifestyle, together. I'll have to focus a different scenario, but it will never replace what it could have
been.
I'll get back to the routine, back "to the grind" as you'd put it, not that I feel like pushing through right now, I just know the
expectancy would be so. Making a future for my kids has always been the mission but, at times, not the priority due to
distant circumstances. I'll stay focused on this plan, this mission, working it's way into our lives as accomplishing the
dream, eventhough it will have to be augmented in your absence. The kids I raise shall know the importance of our motto,
"family takes care of family". This is the foundation for their upbringing, and hopefully I can do it right in this generation
establishing the "normal" for our unique family to follow in the generations that follow.
It will be a long way,
Without you my friend,
And I'll tell you all about it
When I see you again.
With great love,
Always Your Son, Michael

Being his younger brother and next in line on the hand-me-down list twas I who got his shirts and pants when he outgrew them. And I thank him for sharing his Monster Magazines with me. Along with his guidance in putting together those Frankenstein and Phantom Of The Opera models. And I will remember it like it was yesterday, the dopey stage show he and brother Stanley put on in the cellar. The final sketch where one of them was dressed as a woman and bends over and the sign "THE END" was pasted to his butt was a classic. The stage "curtain" was one of Mom's bedcovers hung over a clothesline.

The early years........Eating Dagwood sandwiches in front of the TV, watching horror movies and scary stories, putting together plastic models of mummies and monsters (and loving the smell of that glue), making insect and butterfly collections, catching fireflies in jars, playing tag in the back yard at night, fascination with meteor showers/astronomy/other celestial events and the NASA space program, asking Dad to turn on the very first episode of Star Trek because it was going to be great! and Dad did! and Walter was so happy because Dad listened, showing us how to make a solar eclipse viewer out of a shoe box (During a visit to the hospital in August, I told him I didn't have glasses for the up and coming eclipse. He didn't hesitate to tell me how to build that same viewer.)
The later years.... listening to oldies music--Bowzer from Sha Na Na--on his 8-track while driving in his silver Vega, smoking Kool filtered cigarettes, misplacing his car after a night of partying and paying the consequences with Dad, working...always working....first, on the farm behind our house....then, as a caddy at a local golf course, followed by stints at Chicken Delight, Somerset Studios, ShopRite/Mayfair before becoming an independent owner of a bread delivery route for Arnold Bakery, nicknamed by some as 'the Mule' because of his work ethic, working at times to exhaustion and dangerously so, on one occasion falling asleep in our driveway with the car still running after finishing a mid-nite shift stocking shelves st Shop-Rite.
Working with his hands(and proud of it) building things, renovating rooms, helping Mom with plumbing and flooding problems, gardening and wood chipping, always working on cars especially Mustangs, so much so, his hands were permanently grease stained, showing his cars at Friday Cruise Nights in Somerville, and winning a Trophy for his '69 Mustang at a Father's Day car event, loving his boys, family and friends, enjoying the little things in life by simply sitting outdoors watching nature, sunrises, and sunsets,
Volunteering for the local rescue squad, being the family 'go-to' person in times of crises i.e., cellar floodings and sump pump problems, flying to Mom's house in the middle of the night when Dad Had a stroke, coming to the rescue when Dad fell on occasion, standing up to Dad when he was too much for Mom to handle
Simple, hard-working caring man who took a lot of time helping others (referred to as the male version of Mother Theresa by Mom) courageous in the end, and having no regrets.

Losing someone we love is never easy. I remember the few times I visited with Mike & Christina when Arielle was a toddler and Gavin a new baby, Mr Maj's home was filled with laughter and love. Even though I hadn't visited NJ with Mike & Christina again my thoughts are sad as you all are mourning the loss of a wonderful father & grandfather. Praying for you all.

My brother Walter had an idea for one Fourth of July, back in the late 60's. He wanted to make a rocket and shoot it up into space. He decided to purchase many boxes of sparklers. He started scraping all of the "sparkles" off, which took many days to do and said if we packed an empty toilet paper roll with all the scrapings, and attached a fuse, it would make a great Fourth of July rocket!....So, we waited for our Dad to fall asleep, so he wouldn't know what we were up to in case the rocket went haywire, went outside and set it up on the side of the house. He lit the fuse and lo and behold, the rocket took off but not into space, but across the yellow dried out grass that had turned yellow due to lack of rain over the summer weeks. It burned the grass and we had to start scraping all the blackened grass so Dad wouldn't find it the next day. Dad never did see the burned grass but what a fun time we had thinking our rocket would go into space. It is a fun memory of our brother and I always think about Walter's rocket every Fourth of July.
