Obituary of Betty Steinbeck
Albany, NY – Betty Steinbeck, 88, passed away on January 2nd, 2022 at Albany Medical Center. Born on May 3rd, 1933 in Metuchen, NJ to the late Albert and Helen (Bell) Garretson, Betty grew up in Dunellen and was a graduate of Dunellen High School. In 1952, Betty married the love of her life, Walter Steinbeck, and in 1957, they moved to Edison. Betty moved to Cohoes, NY to live with her daughter’s family in 2020.
After seven years volunteering to establish and run the Oak Tree School library, she accepted a paid position as library clerk. She retired after 25 years of dedication to the students. Betty loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and going on cruises all over the world with her husband, Walter. She was an animal lover and established an incredible relationship with the many creatures in her backyard, including her beloved deer. Betty was extremely active within the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen, having been a member for 58 years.
Betty was predeceased by her husband of 60 wonderful years, Walter, in 2012 and by her sister, Marvel Rudzik, in 1980. She leaves behind her two children, Dr. Wayne Steinbeck and his wife Victoria of Scotch Plains, and Dawn Terry and her husband Dr. Deniz Terry of Cohoes, NY. She will be missed dearly by her three grandchildren, Lauren, Lynn, and Michelle, by her sister Alva Godderz of PA, as well as many other dear family members and friends.
At the request of the family, services will be held privately under the direction of McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals in South Plainfield. Betty will be laid to rest beside her husband, Walter, at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains. In lieu of flowers, donations sent in Betty’s name to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society would be appreciated.
