Robert Commisso posted a condolence
Thursday, March 3, 2022
Joe, who we called Jo Jo, was my special cousin. He was the son of my father’s favorite brother, Louie, and up to my last years of high school, when Uncle Louie passed away, our families visited each other frequently. We lost touch after high school, but reconnected over the last 15 years. He was special because he was only 2 years older than me. I was either much older or much younger than all my other cousins on Long Island. So, he was a little like an older brother and I was always happy to see him and spend time horsing around together. I also remember envying him because my father gave him the M1 rifle he had managed to retain after World War II.
Sometimes, we were partners in crime. In one particular instance, when his family was visiting ours, he and I locked ourselves in the bathroom and began to smoke the cigarettes Joe brought with him, laughing ourselves silly all the time. Needless to say, our fathers were not impressed and we finally came out when my dad threatened to break down the door. No real disciplinary consequences ensued, as I am sure they were reminded of the escapades of their youth.
Joe always believed in the importance of family. After his father passed, he left high school to work and help support his mom and younger sisters. He was in the army during the Vietnam era. He loved dogs. Over the past several years we enjoyed discussing politics, family, our respective states of health, the memory of his wife Royanna, who preceded him in death, and especially the parties they hosted (and the food they prepared for those parties). He also never hesitated to give advice - wanted or not - to me or members of his family. While life was not always kind to him, it seemed to me that Joe always tried to make the best of his circumstances. He loved all his children and grandchildren very much. I will miss my cousin.
