He got upset with me for changing out the radio in Command post when it went south. I gave him my training records, he had to apologize. I was fully qualified to R2 that radio. He taught me all about our network and building networks. I went back to school for computers and programming. When we worked together we knew which tool the other one needed. We had many long philosophical conversations. He'd write the script, I did the edits, it always took two. We parted as best friends and continued to have a wonderful relationship. He is missed every day by anyone who ever had the pleasure of his company.

I am the last living blood kin of the family. When i was the age of 13 i plaid in a school band and at that time Rob was just 5 years old. I plaid the trumpet in the band and after the event i set the trumpet down on a bench and Rob was on that bench also, I happened to turn around and there was Rob holding my Trumpet trying to play it. At that moment i turned to my sister his mother and i said this kid will be a famous musical artist AND HE WAS. P.S. I will miss you kid and we will meet again and we will play the Trumpet together.... your UNCLE butch. See U. soon kid.

Bob was a consummate military professional with many talents including his broadcasting and singing careers, but most of all he was a good friend and colleague. We worked together in various capacities including the 108th Wing’s Combat Training Team, responsible for the training and evaluation of the Wing’s wartime mission. Bob was responsible for the control of the exercises and timing of events. He was phenomenal in that role., bringing his experiences from Vietnam to the fight. Bob also volunteered to be the Emcee at numerous military events and charitable fund raisers. His speaking acumen resulted in the title “The Voice”. Bob was also a fin guy with a great sense of humor. I will miss him greatly. Rest-in-Peace Chief Engel.

I joined the 108th Air National Guard in 1982. I spent 30 years with the Air National Guard and I have spent a reasonable time with Cheif Engel. What I recall of my friend Bob, he always took the time to talk to you when you said "hello". We would talk about the 108th in general and how things are going in our lives. He to me, was always available for you to stop by and say hello. His door was always open. When I heard my friend Bob pass away, I was sad. But what ever demons he was dealing with, I pray he is in a better place now. I will miss my friend Bob. Rest in peace, Chief Engel. Until we meet again.

We traveled similar paths in our early military lives. Now Bob travels solo into eternity and I am left to wonder what scars he had that we were not aware of. May he never feel those scars again and only know the warmth of his friends and family.

To the Family of Robert W. Engel:
You have my deepest condolences and prayers during this difficult time. I worked with Bob in the NJANG at McGuire AFB, Wrightstown, NJ for many years. He was a good friend and neighbor here in Piscataway, NJ. He was greatly respected and well liked throughout the Unit. We called him the "Voice of the Unit" because he emceed at all of the unit events, family days and retirement ceremonies. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. I will miss his early morning posts and his sharing of all the delicious foods he prepared. He always called them: Cheap or Not so Cheap good Eats. Rest well my friend.
